Preschool Classes

We currently offer four classes for children ages 24 months – 5 years old. Classroom descriptions are found below. Please use the CONTACT US button if you would like additional information, or to register for a class. We will get back to you shortly.

Children’s Corner

Ages 24 months – 3 years old

Monday/Wednesday  |  9 – 11:30 AM

or

Tuesday / Thursday  |  9 – 11:30 AM

  • Children must be 2 years old by September 1
  • Children need not be toilet trained
  • For our youngest learners who will focus on:
    • Development of social, taking turns, sharing, self-control, etc.
    • Encouraging speech development: asking for help, initiating conversations, etc.
    • Supporting physical & cognitive growth: safe exploration of environment, gross-motor & fine-motor development, exposure to cognitive concepts
  • Students will experience a variety of age-appropriate activities:
    • outdoor play (weather permitting)
    • free-play within the classroom
    • arts & crafts
    • sensory exploration
    • teacher-led Circle Time which includes: books, music, finger plays, etc.
    • snack time
  • Skills & concepts are presented through themed units such as seasons, holidays, All About Me, animals, transportation, etc.
  • Lesson on the Fruits of the Spirit are woven into Circle Time activities each month

FriendShip I

Young three year-olds

Tuesday / Thursday  |  9 AM – 12 PM

Friday  |  9 – 11:30 AM (begins Jan. 2022)

  • For children turning three years of age, typically late spring to fall
  • Children must be toilet trained
  • Designed for children who are ready for a longer, more structured day
  • This class focuses on:
    • Socialization skills in the early childhood classroom
    • Concepts such as days of the week, months of the year, seasons
    • Counting & number recognition skills
    • Early letter recognition, music & movement, books, stories, etc.
  • Opportunities include:
    • Science, learning about our natural world
    • Using our imaginations
    • Healthy habits & being a friend to others
  • Lesson on the Fruits of the Spirit are woven into Circle Time activities each month

FriendShip II

Older 3 year olds

Monday / Wednesday / Friday

9 AM – 12:30 PM

  • Children must be potty trained
  • Students should bring a nut-free lunch each day
  • The class consists of maintaining a consistent routine and incorporates the following activities throughout the week:
    • Exploring a variety of learning opportunities centered around educational themes
      • science, cooking activities, story time, songs, fingerplays, the weather, and the calendar
    • Learning to work cooperatively in small & large groups
    • Be encouraged to engage in independent play in various classroom areas that include:
      • blocks, books, dramatic play & dress-up, sensory stimulation, and arts and crafts.
  • Children are taught beginning reading and writing skills in a variety of ways:
    • Learning letter formation, with items such as wooden pieces, using the Handwriting Without Tears program
    • Letter recognition through the Sound Suitcase and letter songs
    • Practice printing their names
  • Beginning math skills are taught
    • counting, number recognition, shapes – through games
  • Children are also given opportunities to learn from classroom visitors and special events, such as church staff and the librarian at Sewickley Public Library, parent visits, class performances, and themed days (PJ Day and Beach Day), as well as field trips to the library and the pumpkin patch at the Sewickley United Methodist Church.
  • FriendShip II students are taught monthly faith-based lessons about the Fruit of the Spirit, and have Chapel Time a few times each year led by members of church clergy and staff.

FriendShip Pre-K

4 & 5 year olds

Monday – Friday  |  9 AM  – 1 PM

  • Children must be 4 years old by September 1
  • Children will learn through meaningful play, self-expression and exploring their environment
  • A typical day consists of:
    • Learning centers
    • Large and small group instruction
    • Exploration stations
    • Outdoor play
    • Classroom helper jobs
    • Art projects
    • Snack time & lunchtime
  • Language and literacy development is taught with The Letter People Curriculum by using special Letter Friend puppets, music, books, and written resources.
  • Hands-on activities to learn mathematical concepts of:
    • writing and identifying numbers and shapes, problem-solving, graphing, and sequencing
  • Lessons are structured around thematic units:
    • Friendship, Space, Health, Oceans
  • Through the Artist of the Month program, Pre-K children are introduced to famous artists and explore their techniques through various mediums and materials.
  • Opportunities to learn about the community through classroom field trips to Fern Hollow Nature Center, the Sewickley Fire Station, and the Sewickley Public Library
  • Special classroom events include class performances, parent visit days, Pajama Day, and Beach Day
  • Students are taught monthly faith-based lessons about the Fruit of the Spirit, and have Chapel Time a few times each year led by members of church clergy and staff.
